Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the residential environment of the elderly on their life satisfactions by comparing urban and rural areas. Data came from the Aging in Place Study by the Hallym University Institute for Aging Society. Total number of 1,500 people aged 65 and over living in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul and Chuncheon, Gangwon were surveyed using structured questionnaire by home visiting. Independence sample t-test and multiple regression analysis were used for analysis. Results are as follows: (1) while satisfaction on neighbor relationship, the number of rooms, and subjective awareness of the housing environment have positive effects on life satisfaction, physical environment have negative effect on life satisfaction in urban area. (2) while satisfaction on neighbor relationship, place attachment have positive effects on life satisfaction, physical environment have negative effect on life satisfaction in rural area. The results of this study suggest that there is a need to consider both physical and environmental aspects in designing the environment for the elderly and the subjective perception of the local community and the housing environment should be considered more important than the physical structure.
